Thank you for choosing West Monroe Driving Academy. We are honored to help you develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become a safe driver.

West Monroe Driving Academy (WMDA) is licensed by the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). As required by state regulations, we are fully insured and bonded.

In Louisiana, a 14-hour driver’s education course is required for individuals 18 years and older in order to obtain a driver's license.

Throughout the course, you will learn:

  • The steps to obtain a driver’s license
  • The responsibilities involved in safely operating a vehicle
  • The laws and skills necessary for responsible, safe, and incident-free driving

The 14-hour course includes 6 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training. You will be provided with the Louisiana Driver’s Education Guide for reference.

To enroll, you must first obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) from the OMV. This permit is required for both the classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction with an OMV-licensed instructor.

Important Notes:

  • The TIP card is mandatory for both class attendance and behind-the-wheel lessons.
  • At the end of the 6-hour classroom session, you will take the OMV knowledge test. You must score 80% or higher to pass. Testing is now conducted using tablets.
  • Students who cause damage to the testing tablets or remove one from the premises will incur a $150 replacement fee before they can continue their driving lessons.
  • Students may bring AUX plug-in headphones to have the test read aloud (no wireless headphones).

Classroom Guidelines:

  • No electronic devices, weapons, alcohol, or drugs are allowed. Cell phones may only be used during breaks.
  • WMDA is a smoke-free campus; smoking is prohibited on the premises.
  • Respect for instructors and fellow students is required. Disruptions will not be tolerated, and WMDA reserves the right to dismiss any student who disregards classroom rules. No refunds will be issued for dismissed students.

Once you complete the 6-hour classroom session and pass the OMV knowledge test, you will be assigned an instructor for your 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. If you do not pass the knowledge test, we will schedule a time for you to retake it.

Behind-the-Wheel Instruction:

  • The office does not schedule driving times. Your assigned instructor will contact you directly to arrange your driving sessions.
  • Any cancellations made within 12 hours of your scheduled lesson will incur a $35 fee (per 2-hour session).
  • The state allows up to 90 days (approximately 3 months) to complete the driving portion of the course. If you fail to show up for scheduled lessons or do not complete your required driving within this time frame, no refund will be issued.

Additional Requirements:

  • All driving sessions must begin and end at the WMDA office. Please arrive on time for your appointment.
  • You must bring your TIP card to each session.
  • Students are required to wear appropriate footwear (no heels, flip-flops, or house shoes; sneakers are recommended).
  • If you do not follow the instructor’s lawful instructions or demonstrate disrespect, you may be dismissed from the program. In this case, you will receive a classroom completion certificate, but no refund will be given.

WMDA provides one-on-one instruction, Monday through Saturday, between 6 AM and 9 PM. You may drive up to 4 hours a day, with a 20-minute break after every 2 hours of driving. All vehicles are equipped with GPS and cameras to record both inside and outside of the car.

Completion and Certification: After successfully completing the 14-hour course and final paperwork, the office will contact you to schedule the issuance of your Certificate of Completion.

To obtain your Louisiana driver’s license, you must take a Road Skills Test.

Road Skills Test: WMDA serves as a Third-Party Tester for the OMV. The Road Skills Test is generally scheduled at the end of your behind-the-wheel instruction, provided your instructor deems you ready.

  • If you fail the test during business hours, you may retake it on the same day at no additional charge, subject to availability.
  • If you need to reschedule your test, a $50 rescheduling fee will apply.

For scheduling or further questions, please call us at 318-855-3949.

Additional Information:

  • Deposits are valid for 6 months. After that time, a $50 rescheduling fee will apply.
  • WMDA does not offer refunds; however, payments may be transferred to another course if you are unable to attend the one you initially selected.
  • WMDA is committed to training students to be responsible and safe drivers, following the full process as outlined by the State of Louisiana.

If you have any unresolved grievances, they may be forwarded to the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Public Safety Services, Office of Motor Vehicles, Attention: Training and Certificate Unit, PO Box 64886, Baton Rouge, LA 70896-4886.

We look forward to helping you become a skilled and safe driver!
